Thinking in Headlines

Thinking in Headlines

The headline of any piece determines whether that piece is read or not. Period.

Quoting one of our marketing idols, and advertising legend – David Ogilvy: “When you have written your headline, you have spent eighty cents out of your dollar.”

Not to mention, we know that first impressions matter. TONS. And so do headlines.

It’s amazing how many people read headlines but not the article.

How much time, effort, energy, thought do YOU spend on your headline?

We’ve been told over and over to re-write headlines before anything gets posted. We’ve heard of writers producing over ten different headlines for the same piece. Right?! Which is why we instill this mantra into our writing practice when creating content for clients. We think in headlines all the time.

Quick headline tips:

  • Lists work – “5 Great…”
  • “How to’s” work even better
  • Just look at ‘Buzzfeed’ headlines
  • Answer questions
  • Ask questions
  • Length DOESN’T matter
  • Impact matters

Happy writing!

David
